One person was killed and three were injured by gunfire after a fight broke out in the parking lot of a gym in the East Bay early Thursday morning, officials aid.

The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. at a 24 Hour Fitness on Lone Tree Way in Brentwood, Lt. Walter O’Grodnick, a spokesperson for the Brentwood Police Department, told SFGATE.

The argument started between several people on or near the gym’s basketball court and moved outside onto the parking lot, where at least two people exchanged gunfire, O’Grodnick said.

When police arrived on scene, they found that one man in his 20s had died from a gunshot wound, O’Grodnick said. Police later learned that three other people who were wounded in the shooting took themselves to local hospitals.

“We have a suspect detained but have yet to determine their involvement,” he said.

O’Grodnick said that this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. “This was not an active shooter situation,” he said. “It started with an argument.”

The Brentwood Police Department said on Facebook just before 6 a.m. that officers were currently working an active investigation at the 24 Hour Fitness on Lone Tree Way.

“Please avoid the area as the gym and parking lot will be closed for several hours,” the department said. “There is no threat to public safety at this time. We will be releasing further information shortly.”

Brentwood is a small city in Contra Costa County. The 24 Hour Fitness is at 5961 Lone Tree Way near John Marsh Heritage Highway. O’Grodnick said the gym is closed Thursday as police investigate the incident.

This is a developing story and details will be added as they emerge.
