Japan Box Office: Laid-Back Camp: Movie Makes Its 3rd Place Debut

While Tom Cruise’s Top Gun Maverick has stayed on the top for three consecutive weekends in Japan, Laid-Back Camp: Movie, the sequel anime feature film based on the characters from Afro’s camping-themed manga Laid-Back Camp, earned an impressive 200 million yen (1.57 million USD) on its first Saturday and Sunday, making its third place debut in its opening weekend. The film also ranked third in Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.02/5.0 based on 997 reviews.

The 120-minute film was released in 121 theaters across Japan (13 theaters more than The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie and 30 theaters less than Teasing Master Takagi-san: The Movie), then made 351.4 million yen (2.77 million USD) on 250,000 admissions over the three days from Friday to Sunday. Its Saturday-Sunday gross was about 75 percent of that of The Quintessential Quintuplets and 235 percent of that of Takagi-san. Based on the first week’s results, the film’s domestic box-office performance is likely to settle around one billion yen (7.87 million USD).

Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO dropped to fourth from last week’s second in its fourth weekend. Its four-week total has reached 1.9 billion yen (14.96 million USD) on 1.4 million admissions to become the fourth top-grossing Japanese anime film of 2022, surpassing The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie, which ranked eighth in its seventh weekend with a total gross of 1.77 billion yen (13.93 million USD).

Coming in tenth was Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween. The 25th Conan film has earned a huge 9.1 billion yen (71.63 million USD) on 6.53 million admissions in 12 weeks and is expected to be the second top-grossing in the Conan anime franchise soon, breaking the total box office record of the 22nd film Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (2018 / 9.18 billion yen).

It has been out of the top ten, but the official website for Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island reported on July 4 that its total cumulative box office gross had surpassed the one billion yen (7.97 million USD) mark to become the sixth Japanese anime film of 2022 to do so.

The highest rating film of the weekend was the feature film edition of Backflip!!, which received an average rating of 4.26/5.0 based on 59 reviews, but it failed to rank in the overall weekend box office ranking top ten.

And, as expected, Final Transmutation, the second and final part of the Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Edition live-action film series, quickly disappeared from the top 10 after making its eighth place debut last weekend.
